West Ham United vs Liverpool predictions

Liverpool’s run is almost over. A defeat against Everton on Wednesday left their Premier League title hopes up in the air, not least because Manchester City and Arsenal were victorious in their respective midweek assignments.

Anything other than a win on Saturday would effectively put the Reds out of contention. Even with a victory at the London Stadium, they would remain rank outsiders.

Jurgen Klopp will be looking for a much improved performance compared to the one his side put in against Everton. Liverpool were beaten at Goodison Park for the first time since 2010 – and they deserved to be.

Once again, Liverpool were wasteful in front of goal. Everton defended valiantly, but Klopp’s side had enough chances to find the back of the net. This is not the first time in recent weeks that their profligacy has let them down.

Even more surprisingly, they were no match for the hunger and desire shown by the Everton players. “It wasn’t good enough,” admitted Klopp, before apologizing to Liverpool fans.

This slowdown dates back to that extraordinary 4-3 defeat against Manchester United in the FA Cup last month. Liverpool should have won this game easily, but they let their main rivals get back into it.

Something similar happened in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford in the league, before Liverpool were beaten twice at home by Atalanta and Crystal Palace.

The Reds are running out of steam. When Klopp announced in January that this would be his final season at the helm, he revealed he was running out of energy. The same thing seems to have happened to his team, both mentally and physically.

Liverpool look jaded. They haven’t played with their characteristic intensity lately. Barring a spectacular turnaround, Klopp’s swan song will not end with a title parade at Anfield.

West Ham vs Liverpool predictions

Anything other than an away win in Saturday’s kick-off would surely end Liverpool’s Premier League title chances.

Liverpool wins and over 2.5 goals – 10/11 (Copybet)

Liverpool must recover after their latest disappointment.

All is not yet lost, although it should be. A victory in the midday game on Saturday would see Klopp’s men move level on points with Arsenal in first place.

West Ham United have also struggled recently. They were beaten 5-2 by Crystal Palace in their last encounter, with the Hammers trailing 4-0 after just half an hour.

David Moyes’ men have won just one of their last eight meetings in all competitions. The Scot’s future is still undecided and, while many West Ham fans are hoping for a change in the dugout, the atmosphere at the London Stadium could become toxic if the team finishes the season poorly.

However, West Ham has quality offensive players. They will give Liverpool’s defense something to think about.

Yet only the bottom three have worse defensive records than the Hammers. The goals are on the cards here.

West Ham will score first – 17/10 (Copybet)

Before the season started, few predicted that Liverpool would be in a Premier League title race. Finishing four or six points from first place would therefore not be a disaster.

It will always hurt that they collapsed late on, but Liverpool arguably held on for a while. There is one measure in particular that illustrates this.

Throughout the season, Klopp’s team has relied on returns. They have conceded the first goal in 15 of their 34 Premier League matches, compared to seven for Arsenal and 11 for Manchester City.

Liverpool still managed to collect a division-high 23 points after conceding first, but it’s difficult to maintain that target over the course of a campaign.

This has been particularly problematic away from home: hosts Liverpool have broken the deadlock in nine of 17 matches. That’s more than bottom-half teams like Brentford and Bournemouth.

West Ham were not in action in midweek, so they should be fresher than the Reds. This is another reason to support this bet.

Darwin Nunez will score at any time – 23/20 (Copybet)

Darwin Nunez isn’t the only Liverpool player to have missed golden opportunities in recent times, but he embodies their wastefulness in front of goal more than anyone else.

Only Erling Haaland (30) has missed more big chances than Nunez (26) this season. But while Haaland has scored 20 Premier League goals, the Liverpool frontman has just 11 to his name.

Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the only player in the division to have underperformed his expected goals more than Nunez.

Patience is starting to wear thin and the Uruguay international really needs to respond this weekend.

He just might do it. For all his faults, Nunez continues to put himself in good positions in and around the penalty area. He will surely score a point again soon.
