2,000 Guineas 2024 predictions, odds and preview at Newmarket

Newmarket hosts the 2000 Guineas Stakes on Saturday as the first British champion series of the flat season.

City Of Troy is the favorite ahead of 13 rivals, made up entirely of three-year-old colts, with a long list of incredible previous winners.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained horse represents one of four potential entries with three outsiders in contention ahead of the final round of declarations due to be made on Thursday morning.

River Tiber is a huge prize in the outpost market as he has the potential to not run at all as he has only been seen on sprints between 5f-6f.

The 2000 Guineas is a historic race dating back to its first recorded competition in 1809.

2000 Guineas winners per year

  • 2023: Chaldean
  • 2022: Corœbus
  • 2021: Poetic Flare
  • 2020: Kameko
  • 2019: Greater Greece
  • 2018: Saxon Warrior
  • 2017: Churchill
  • 2016: Galileo Gold
  • 2015: Gleneagles
  • 2014: Night of Thunder

Very often, in the 2000 Guineas, the question is not who wins but who comes behind.

In recent years, those who ranked behind have performed well or better.

Coroebus won in 2022 and has only been seen three times since, winning the St James’s Palace Stakes by a head at Royal Ascot.

But he failed to establish himself in two subsequent appearances as favorite.

And this is another aspect that is prevalent in Guinea, is that the boys in blue (Godolphin) are prominent.

2023 was the first edition in which a Godolphin horse had not placed in the top three since 2019.

With Pinatubo third in 2020, Master Of The Seas second in 2021 and Coroebus and Native Trail first and second in 2022.

Mainly trained by Charlie Appleby, ridden by William Buick or James Doyle, a Godolphin-owned horse has placed in the top three in eight of the last 11 renewals.

However, there is only one entry this year in the Royal Blue colours, in the form of the undefeated Notable Speech.

But this could be another big victory in Britain for Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien, the clear favorite, having not won this race since 2019.

The Irish trainer has won this race ten times since 1998 with drivers including Rock Of Gibraltar, George Washington, Camelot and Churchill.

Of course, Frankel won this race in 2011, two years after Sea The Stars, both of whom represent some of the best products in racing, which is another reason why this race is for the future of the sport.

Tips for 2000 guineas

Haatem

It’s worth supporting this race with a few punts each way in case the big favorite doesn’t show up or, at the very least, to get a big gain for his standings.

Haatem had a busy season as a two-year-old winning nine races twice but often showing plenty of potential in defeats.

That’s part of why it was still a shock to see him win so comfortably in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket just a few weeks ago.

Reversing Dewhurst Stakes form in October with Eben Shaddad.

This horse finished well ahead in October but more than three lengths behind Haatem on his first start over 1m, and winning in this manner over course and distance on his seasonal debut suggests he is worth taking. follow at such a big price.

He finished almost nine lengths behind the favorite, but this turnaround in form brings him closer if he still has room to improve.
