Red Bull’s design chief Adrian Newey to leave Formula 1 team over Christian Horner scandal

Adrian Newey is reportedly set to leave his role as head of design at Red Bull after almost two decades.

The 65-year-old has been with the Formula 1 team since 2006, but is set to leave Red Bull before his contract expires next year.

That’s according to BBC Sport, who said he was on the verge of stepping down following the Christian Horner scandal.

Red Bull team principal Horner has been cleared of “inappropriate behavior” towards a female colleague.

It was claimed Newey had been “disturbed” by the situation and would now seek to leave.

The BBC claims that despite his contract ending in 2025, he is considering negotiating an exit which would allow him to join a new team for next season.

Newey has been linked with a move to Ferrari, which is already eyeing 2025.

Lewis Hamilton will join Mercedes as Ferrari look to win a first Drivers’ Championship and a first Constructors’ Championship since 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Newey fueled rumors of a departure earlier this month while speaking to racingnews365.

He said of his future: “I enjoy it. Since I was about 10, certainly 12, I wanted to be a designer.

“I don’t think I know the word ‘engineer’ – in motor racing and, ideally, in Formula 1.

“That’s what I (put) my whole teenage years towards. I managed to get that first job in motor racing after I graduated.

Sebastian Vettel plays “Word Association” on F1 stars including Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, and talks about the best drivers and future champions of all time.

“I enjoyed it immensely and continue to enjoy it.

“So I think as long as I continue to enjoy it and the team wants me, I will continue to do it for now.

“And then we’ll have to see into the future. I don’t tend to plan too far ahead.”
