2.25 Newmarket – Silver Lady

The Group 2 Dahlia Stakes is a muddled affair with the eccentric Running Lion leading the early betting.

The question is how ready she will be for the first time, and a chance is taken on the highly regarded Silver Lady, who achieved a career best on her last start 107 days ago by capturing a Meydan Group 2.

Silver Lady is among the least raced fillies here after just five races, and she is starting to live up to the previous hype (sent out favorite for two good Listed races in her second and third starts).

The way she beat a stablemate last time was impressive and this race should go down to Astral Beau’s pace angle on the field. She appeals enough to get involved, even with a 3 pound penalty to carry.

3:00 p.m. Newmarket – Gold Ring

A tricky handicap of 1m6f follows the Dahlia and a chance is taken on Bague D’or for James Ferguson.

Bague D’or is making its seasonal return, but is doing very well (figures of 2211 after breaks of 85 days or more) and can pick up where it left off for Ferguson after showing steady progression throughout its career – and again last season. after joining this coach.

He also performs well at Newmarket (course figures 211) and is fairly lightly raced for a six year old, so could improve again.

Mikael Barzalona is an eye-catching jockey and his first ride for Ferguson can be a winner aboard this proven stayer.

3.40 New market – Ramatuelle

The French could have a good day since Ramatuelle is also of interest to the feature film 1000 Guineas.

Ramatuelle was best known as a two-year-old sprinter as she won the Prix Robert Papin before besting the excellent Vandeek in the Group 1 Prix Morny.

However, trainer Christopher Head clearly sees her as a future miler and she went some way to justifying that impression by remaining second over 7f in the Prix Imprudence on her return.

It is a classic trial popular in France and Head is expected to have plenty of work ahead with Newmarket in mind.

Provided they don’t go too hard, this elegant filly might have a little too much toe for the more robust types.

This is an open race and is being appealed as one that could shorten the betting.
