Manchester United vs. Burnley predictions

Manchester United put their supporters to the test last week.

Trailing by three nil and cruising into the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City last weekend, United managed to concede three times in the final 20 minutes.

They were then saved by a marginal offside decision in the final minute of extra time, with the Sky Blues scoring a ‘winning’ goal.

United eventually won the penalty shootout, but their flaws were exposed at Wembley Stadium.

A few days later, Erik ten Hag’s side fell twice at home to bottom-placed Sheffield United. They came back to win 4-2, but it was once again an occasion where the Red Devils were unconvincing.

Progressing to the FA Cup final, however they got there, means United’s season is still alive. They will be underdogs against Manchester City, but anything can happen in a single match.

Not that their Premier League campaign is completely dead. United will miss out on a top four place and the Champions League, but it is important that they qualify for the Europa League.

Given the little success they have had since Alex Ferguson retired 11 years ago, United cannot afford to turn their noses up in the secondary continental competition.

Winning the FA Cup would qualify them for the Europa League, as would a top-six finish. The Ten Hag side hold a three-point lead over seventh-placed Newcastle United heading into the weekend, but the Magpies have a superior goal difference.

Burnley also have a lot to play for. A 4-1 defeat to Sheffield United last time out kept their survival hopes alive.

It would take a huge effort for the Clarets to get out of the bottom three from here, but a win at Old Trafford could see them finish the weekend level on points with Nottingham Forest in 17th place.

Manchester United vs Burnley Betting Tips

Manchester United are chasing European football while Burnley are fighting to avoid relegation.

Manchester United to win and both teams to score – 7/5 (Paddy Power)

Manchester United have been very lucky this season. You may be surprised to learn that only five teams – Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal – have conceded fewer goals in 2023/24.

This is despite United ranking 17th in expected goals. In other words, only Luton Town, Sheffield United and West Ham United have given away better chances than the Red Devils over the course of the season. Burnley, incidentally, are tied with United.

This is damning for Ten Hag, who has shown himself to be completely incapable of solving this chronic problem. Injuries haven’t helped, but the Dutchman’s organizational skills leave a lot to be desired.

With that in mind, Burnley will have some joy at Old Trafford, where United have conceded at least two goals in each of their last three games.

However, the individual quality they have should allow United to qualify. Burnley have been too easy to play against for much of the season and that will cost them here.

Over 3.5 goals – 10/11 (Paddy Power)

Burnley won’t be relegated if they fall here, but they are running out of time to get out of the drop zone for the first time this season.

Vincent Kompany’s side will likely need to win three of their remaining four matches to have any chance of finishing above the dreaded dotted line.

Manchester United have shown time and time again that it is possible to achieve it, so we won’t see Burnley meekly sitting idly by on Saturday.

If they fall behind, the visitors will be forced to attack in search of an equalizer. Their attitude, combined with United’s open-mindedness, means we should expect a marquee encounter at Old Trafford.

Remarkably, each of United’s last five games have seen over 3.5 goals scored. Chances are their next one will follow suit.

Aim for over 3.5 goals at 10/11 with Paddy Power

Bruno Fernandes will score anytime – 10/17 (Paddy Power)

This is not the first time Bruno Fernandes has taken over when Manchester United needed him in midweek.

With Sheffield United leading 2-1 at Old Trafford, Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot and then scored a superb goal to give his side a 3-2 lead.

The Portuguese international has had a good end to the season. He has scored seven goals in his last five appearances, compared to eight in his previous 39 outings.

Several United players have underperformed this season, but Fernandes is not one of them. One of the Premier League’s most productive creators, he has recently rediscovered his goalscoring touch.

Burnley aren’t the toughest team to play against, so Fernandes will have plenty of space between the lines this weekend.

Advise Bruno Fernandes to score anytime at 17/10 with Paddy Power
