Young mother wakes up after developing ’80-year-old lungs’ from deadly habit

A mother claims vaping almost killed her – when she discovered the ‘popping’ sound when she breathed was due to the habit of ‘frying her lungs like hot chicken’.

Hannah Roth says she had never smoked before, but took up vaping as a “bad habit” due to the stress of pandemic lockdown and was soon breastfeeding “every hour of the day.”

The 30-year-old woman began hearing a “popping” sound in her lungs last month when she breathed and developed a fever of 40C. The mother-of-two was horrified when doctors revealed she had pneumonia specifically caused by vaping, as she had no idea it was a potential side effect.

Scans revealed that his lungs resembled those of someone who was 80 years old or had smoked for a decade and an X-ray would have shown the deterioration of his lungs.

The receptionist says she has refused to touch a vape since that day, because the doctor threw her menthol vape in the trash and warned her that if she continued, she would “die.”

“The doctor came and showed me my x-ray and said ‘are you vaping?’ and he said ‘that’s why you have pneumonia’ Hannah, from Tennessee, USA, said.

“He told me if I kept (vaping) I was almost going to die. He took my vape out of my purse and threw it in the trash. He said ‘if you keep smoking this , then you are not”. I’ll be able to breathe.”

“It was quite scary as a mother. I knew I wouldn’t be able to vape anymore because I have two children to look after. He said: ‘This is not what a 30-year-old woman’s lungs should look like years old”. looks like a ten year old smoker.

“I looked like I had the lungs of someone in their 80s, much older, when he showed me that first scan. I was really angry with myself because I had no idea that vaping could do that.

“The doctor told me ‘every time you vape this vape, this vapor goes into your lungs and it’s like you’re frying hot chicken in there’. That’s why it made a popping sound when I breathed .”

Hannah estimates she had been vaping every hour of the day for four years.

Hannah has now sworn off vaping in order to look after her seven and ten-year-old sons and hopes to warn others to give up vaping.

“I haven’t vaped since I went to the hospital and my lungs don’t make any popping noises anymore,” Hannah said.

“The doctor told me that if I stopped vaping, my lungs could heal as long as I stopped vaping.

“I still want to vape, but I chew a lot of gum and that helps. Overall I feel much healthier and I’m saving money now too because I don’t buy of vape every week.

“My advice would be don’t vape, don’t pick it up and hit it. Even if you think you have control over it, sometimes you don’t.”
