Why the Nets must act fast if Donovan Mitchell opens up in New York

Donovan Mitchell was part of the Nets’ plans. It remains to be seen whether they are in his.

Over the past year, Brooklyn has been eyeing Mitchell, a New York-born All-Star who was reportedly unfulfilled and unhappy in Cleveland and willing to return home. While the Cavaliers fell short of their stated goal of an NBA Finals after being eliminated in the second round, his status as a potential free agent next summer has made his situation the most closely watched in the league.

The Post reported the Nets’ interest in Mitchell, while ESPN cited the Lakers and Heat as also being in the mix. Mitchell came out Thursday and attempted to dispel any speculation about his future. But the genie is out of the bottle and won’t be reinstated until he signs an extension in Cleveland, picks up his 2025-26 option or is traded.

The latter appears to be the best way for Brooklyn to get Mitchell, if not the only real viable path to the All-Star.
