” Where is the consistency ? – Erik Ten Hag fumes after Manchester United penalty following FA Cup decision

Erik ten Hag has called for consistency in refereeing after Manchester United were denied a penalty in their 1-1 draw against Burnley.

The Red Devils looked set to make it three points when Antony put them 1-0 up in the 79th minute at Old Trafford – his first Premier League goal this season.

But three minutes from time, Zeki Amdouni scored a penalty to equalize after an error by André Onana.

However, United could have had a shot of their own on goal in the closing stages after Vitinho handled Scott McTominay’s cross.

VAR failed to get involved, although United awarded a similar penalty in last week’s FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry after the ball hit Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s hand .

Ten Hag was quick to point this out, speaking about his frustration in his post-match interview with Sky Sports.

Commenting on whether Burnley’s late equalizer was down to bad luck or mentality, Ten Hag said: “Both, bad luck and we’ve had some unlucky luck with the refereeing in recent weeks.

“We have conceded so many penalties, this one is justified but others.

“If you make Wan-Bissaka a penalty in the FA Cup semi-final, then what is it (Vitinho)? Where is the consistency?

“We have to look in the mirror. We made a mistake, but you take responsibility for it and they have to understand what that means for a team and for a manager.”

Regarding the performance as a whole, Ten Hag stressed that it was a positive performance from his men, despite the 16 penalties conceded by the relegation-threatened Clarets.

He told BBC Sport: “We created a lot of chances as well.

“We are one of the most dynamic and entertaining teams in the league right now.

“We created a lot of chances by playing good football, there was no need to lose control.

“We fixed that problem at halftime and the second half was much better.”

After chasing Champions League football, United now risk failing to qualify for a European competition next season with four games remaining.

They currently sit in sixth place, one point ahead of seventh-placed Newcastle.
