The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Monday announced an Indian team for the latest Olympic qualifying tournament in Istanbul, similar to the team that participated in the Asian qualifiers in Bishkek recently due to lack of time to conduct further trials.

2018 Asian Games gold medalist Vinesh Phogat (50kg), Anshu Malik (57kg) and U23 world champion Reetika (76kg) were left out of the squad as they have already secured quotas for the Games Olympics in Paris, but the rest of the team remains the same. “We had almost no time to organize new trials. So it was decided to send the same entries for WOQG,” the source said, adding, “it would have been very difficult for the wrestlers to lose weight twice in a short period of time to compete in their categories. respective weights.

“They had to lose weight first for the trials, then again for the competition; it takes a lot of energy and effort to achieve it (lose weight),” the source said.

Indian grapplers have a good chance of clinching a few more places at the Paris Games in Istanbul as 54 Olympic quota places in each of the six weight categories of the three wrestling styles are up for grabs.

“Each weight category offers three places at the Paris Olympic Games – one for each of the two finalists and one for the winner of the playoff between the two bronze medalists,” United World Wrestling (UWW) said in a statement on Monday.

“The Greco-Roman competition will begin on May 9, followed by women’s wrestling and freestyle wrestling on May 13,” adds the UWW press release.
