Viscera test rejects foul play, says gangster-turned-politician did not die of poisoning

The post-mortem was conducted in the presence of Mukhtar Ansari’s youngest son Umar Ansari at the Rani Durgavati Medical College.

Who was Mukhtar Ansari?

Ansari, 63, was a five-time MLA from Mau Sadar seat and was behind bars in UP and Punjab since 2005. He had over 60 criminal cases pending against him. He has been convicted in eight cases since September 2022 by different courts of Uttar Pradesh and lodged in Banda jail.

His name figured in the list of 66 gangsters released by the Uttar Pradesh police last year.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which prohibits large gatherings, were imposed across the state after Ansari’s death, the Director General of Police said of Uttar Pradesh, Prashant Kumar.

Ansari, who hails from Mau, is also said to have strong influence in the neighboring districts of Ghazipur and Varanasi. The social media cell of the Uttar Pradesh Police has also been activated to keep a close watch on illegal elements online, he said.
