Viktor Hovland misses one-handed putt and throws away five figures in Masters meltdown

Viktor Hovland went viral for missing a putt by inches at the Masters on Friday.

After putting himself in contention after the first round, Hovland shot a disastrous over-par 81 to miss the cut.

Many big names struggled at Augusta National in the second round as very high winds wreaked havoc around the iconic golf course.

Ryder Cup hero Hovland completely imploded on the 15th hole, missing a short putt for par before failing to convert the remaining tap-in.

Visibly sated, the world No. 6 used one hand to fix a bogey, but missed the hole by about three inches.

“Oh no. He’s completely lost his mind,” former major champion Rich Beem said in commentary on Sky Sports.

Hovland made the comeback putt, which was much longer, but left the 15th hole with a par eight over for the championship.

With the cut line at six-over, Hovland was forced to pack his bags, despite playing his first nine holes of the tournament at four under and looking like one of the contenders.

No one who misses the cut gets a share of the £14.5 million purse at the 2024 Masters.

Had Hovland made the first five-footer for par, he would have been guaranteed at least £36,000 to qualify for the weekend.

Justin Thomas, a two-time major winner, suffered a similar crisis, playing his final four holes in par seven over to miss the cut by one stroke.

However, Hovland won’t be too worried when it comes to getting paid.

In 2023, the 26-year-old earned £27.8 million in winnings, recording the most lucrative season in golf history.

He won the £14.5 million FedEx Cup prize after three PGA Tour victories – then played for Europe at the Ryder Cup.

Hovland was dramatically out of shape in 2024 after opting to undergo a number of sweeping changes.
