US Not ‘Funding War in Ukraine’ but ‘Protecting Democracy’

  • Ukraine’s Zelenskyy said that the Americans do not “finance the war” but “protect democracy” with their help.
  • Zelensky said Ukrainians are fighting so the United States and others don’t have to.
  • Once passed by the Senate and signed by Biden, the munitions and weapons could reach Ukraine within days.

Americans may be war-weary in Ukraine, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reminded them Sunday that at least they don’t have to fight there.

The Ukrainian president’s comments came Sunday morning on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” just one day after the House of Representatives approved a long-awaited aid package for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy spoke with NBC’s Kristen Welker. He said the United States was “protecting democracy” in Europe.

“The Americans are not financing the war in Ukraine. Above all, they are protecting freedom and democracy throughout Europe. And Ukraine is fighting,” he said. “(The) US military no longer has to fight to protect NATO countries. That’s what the Ukrainians are doing.”

The $60 billion aid package passed the House despite strong dissent from the Republican Party. It now heads to the Senate, where it is expected to pass. President Joe Biden has signaled his intention to sign it.

Once that happens, vital munitions and weapons could reach Ukraine within days, helping it stem the Russian tide.

“It’s just about the ammunition that the world provides. And I think it’s a good decision,” Zelensky said. “As long as Ukraine is standing, there is no direct war between the United States or NATO and Russian aggression. So Ukraine continues to fight and it protects everyone else.”

If Ukraine loses the war against Russia, analysts fear that Russia could use this momentum to target NATO countries.
