I Spent 20 Years in Prison…Here’s the Scary Thing I Noticed on My First Day in a Maximum Security Prison

A man who spent 20 years in prison has revealed the scariest thing he experienced behind bars.

Dwaine Patterson was sentenced to a discretionary life sentence for attempted murder at age 20 after shooting two people during a gang war in 2000.

He spent 22 years in prison, seven of them in solitary confinement, where he endured 23 hours each day without any human contact.

Dwaine, who grew up near Clapham Junction, southwest London, was also sent to a young offenders’ institute for five years after cutting off a rival gang member’s finger with a knife while He was only 13 years old.

Speaking on the Anything Goes podcast with presenter James English, Dwaine revealed how dangerous it was to be in the prison canteen.

He said: “One of the first things I recognized when I entered the high security wing, when someone would come out of the kitchen with a pan in their hand, everyone would move sideways , everyone was watching.

“One person was patting me and saying ‘you don’t know where this is going’.

“Nine times out of ten it’s just someone making their food, but sometimes it can be used as ghee.

“Remember, in dispersions where you can cook food where you have oil or butter or ghee, I think it’s one of the worst incidents I’ve ever seen.”

“When you let it bubble for such a long time that it turns black and someone pours it on a person, it’s horrible when you hear them scream.”

Dwaine also revealed that he once saw a man beaten “inhumanely” by prison guards to the point of wetting himself.

He explained that the man’s mother had recently died and he wanted to call her family to make sure she was okay.

However, his request was refused by prison guards and, in frustration, he began kicking his cell door.

According to Dwaine, this provoked the prison guards who beat him to the point that it became “inhumane” and caused the man to wet himself.

Dwaine said he remembers the officers laughing and waving their fingers at the man before cutting off his clothes.

“I think it was one of the worst things I saw when I was in solitary confinement and I still remember it.

“He was a guy and he’s not a friend of mine, he has racist tendencies but his mother died and so all he wanted to do was phone his family and have this conversation with his family.

“The policeman said to kick the door again, he was frustrated because he wanted to make the phone call which they weren’t allowing him to make and so he kicked it and (the guards) said come on guys let’s get dressed and they beat him so bad.

“It almost became inhumane and he got wet.”

“They were laughing about it and I remember some of the female officers were also wiggling their little fingers because he was not (sic) willing to give up.

“So they made fun of him and they cut his clothes and so on.”

Dwaine explained earlier in the podcast how he cut off someone’s finger with a knife when he was 13.

He said: “Being so young, because I was 13, you don’t understand the magnitude of what you actually did.”

Dwaine explained why he cut off the person’s finger, saying, “It depends on the dynamic of the group and not liking the particular group.”

“I can’t say per se that this kid did anything directly towards me, but I didn’t like the whole group of people he was associated with, so I was just making a statement.”

“It’s bad, it’s horrible and my heart goes out to the kid, he’s an adult now and he has a family.”

Dwaine was released from Feltham Young Offenders Institution aged 18, but was quickly back behind bars two years later.

Speaking about the night he shot dead two people, Dwaine said: “I got a phone call and said these individuals were apparently involved in illegal activity.

“My protocol was good, we’re going to go and get what they have and they can’t say anything about it because they’re also involved in what we’re involved in.

“We also had a system in place where if you show your weapon, you use it. There’s no point in talking about something and waving it around if you’re not going to use it.

“So that’s basically what I did. I pulled out the gun and shot them both and I thank God they survived.

After the incident, Dwaine eventually turned himself in to the police as “other innocent people were dragged into” the incident.

Dwaine was subsequently sentenced to a discretionary life sentence for attempted murder at the South West Magistrates Court in 2000.

Dwaine previously spoke on another podcast, BEAMLDN, where he described some of the heartbreaking things he witnessed while incarcerated.

He said he saw someone’s throat “slit from behind” and saw someone throw hot oil on another man’s face.

He said: “I have seen horrible things. Like someone getting their throat cut from behind or hot oil, it’s horrible.

“When you see the person’s face and everything melts away. »
