Tyreek Hill has been trying to reach a new deal since the end of the 2023 season

When the Dolphins traded for wide receiver Tyreek Hill two years ago, he got a four-year, $120 million extension that was and still is a three-year, $75 million deal. As reported earlier today, the contract hasn’t aged well.

It turns out that Hill was aware of this. And efforts have been made to remedy this.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, efforts to resolve Hill’s contract began after the end of the 2023 season. That’s when Hill had 1,799 receiving yards, despite suffering an ankle injury in end to the season that derailed what seemed like a likely 2,000-yard campaign.

The effort intensified after Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown got his latest new contract. Brown got his previous deal when Hill got his current deal, and Brown had three years left on his deal. Like Hill does.

Hill, from a practical standpoint, has two years left. This last year, to the tune of $45 million in cash, will surely not be paid.

The time has come for a new deal. He turned 30 on March 1. The market has increased. The ceiling has been raised.

It’s entirely possible (if not likely…if not probable) that Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson will have a new contract as early as next week. If that happens, it will reset the market and give Hill a new focus.

It remains to be seen whether he will be able to match or beat Jefferson’s agreement. Either way, expect him to try.
