Two men charged in headless torso investigation as police discover other human remains scattered near train tracks

Two men have been charged with murder in an investigation into a headless torso as police discover more human remains scattered near train tracks.

This follows earlier discoveries made by Greater Manchester Police at three separate locations in Salford over the past three weeks.

Michal Jaroslaw Polchowski and Marcin Majerkiewicz, both from Eccles, were charged with murder today and are due to appear at Tameside Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.

An investigation was first launched after a decapitated torso was found wrapped in plastic at Kersal Dale wetlands in Salford on April 4.

Police now believe the victim was a man in his 60s living in Salford and his family have been informed.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes told a press conference last night: “We have continued to make significant progress in our investigation into the human remains discovered in Kersal earlier this month.

“From day one, our priority has been to identify the man and his family so we can provide them with the support and answers they need.

“Thanks to meticulous forensic work, we are now confident we have identified the man. Formal identification has not yet taken place, but we believe he is a man in his 60s and lives in Salford.

He continued: “We believe he (the victim) is known to the two suspects we have in custody.

“They remained in custody for questioning over the weekend, as we seek to establish how the victim experienced this tragic outcome.”

“We have worked painstakingly to follow every line of inquiry in this investigation.

“Over the past few days we have acted on information and set up four scenes for further searches – one of them is at a warehouse in Bury and three of them are in Salford, including here at Blackleach Reservoir.”

A package containing human remains was found by a dog walker in Colliery Wood in Salford yesterday.

A separate discovery was also made at Blackleach Reservoir yesterday by police divers.

Detective Superintendent Hughes said while “forensic testing will continue to establish who these remains belong to”, they are “confident” they belong to the victim in this investigation.

He added: “We also searched a house in Winton where we believe the victim and the two suspects lived.

“We found evidence that the victim likely died there – most likely in late March.

“While this is significant progress, we know there is still work to be done to complete this investigation.

“I also recognize that the details of this case will have been distressing for the people of Salford and beyond – including the officers working diligently on this investigation, and especially this man’s heartbroken family.”

“Local officers will continue to patrol the affected areas and we will provide updates when we have more information.”

Reacting to the accusations today, ACC Sarah Jackson of Greater Manchester Police said: “A large number of officers, staff and specialists have worked diligently on this investigation over the past three weeks.

“This is a massive, collective effort, with the victim and their family at the heart from the start.

“We have deployed specially trained officers to support the family as they deal with this tragic news. They are aware of this morning’s new discovery and will continue to be kept informed of our progress.

“Despite the charges brought today, our work is far from done.

“The scenes we have already established in Bury and Salford will remain in place for much of this week while our searches and investigations continue. Local officers will continue to patrol affected areas to provide reassurance.

“We will continue to follow all lines of investigation to recover and reunite the victim with his family, thus putting a dignified end to this terrible scenario.

“I would like to thank the communities of Salford and beyond for their cooperation throughout this investigation. I know this incident has come as a shock and the support we have received from people in the area is much appreciated.
