Trump says abortion should be left to states in highly anticipated announcement: Former president says there should be exceptions for rape and incest, but does NOT specify one-week limit

  • The announcement was posted on Truth Social as a four-minute video.
  • Trump believes the federal government should stay away from the topic and abortion as he celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
  • Former president says he supports IVF amid Alabama ruling on issue

Donald Trump said abortion policy should be left to the states, as he finally revealed his stance on the highly controversial issue after teasing it for months.

The former president did not specify a time frame for when he would or would not support abortion in the video of his highly anticipated announcement posted on Truth Social.

Trump celebrated the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, sparking two years of debate over how abortion should be handled now at the state and federal levels.

The 77-year-old also said in the four-and-a-half-minute video that he believed in exceptions for the right to terminate a pregnancy in cases of rape, incest and to save the mother’s life.

“We have abortion where everyone wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine it by vote or legislation or maybe both, and whatever they decide, it must be the law country,” Trump said in the video.

He also accused Democrats of believing in “executing the baby after birth.”

Previously, Trump suggested he would support a 15-week federal ban on abortion.

Speaking last month on the radio show Sid & Friends in the Morning, Trump confirmed reports that he was considering proposing policies that would implement a federal ban allowing abortion during the first trimester.

“The number of weeks, now, people agree on 15, and I think in terms of that, and it will result in something very reasonable,” Trump said in the interview.

“But people really are – even the hardliners agree, it seems like 15 weeks, that seems like a number that people agree on. But I will make this announcement at the right moment.

Now Trump has dodged by blaming the issue on the states.

In the video, Trump discussed in vitro fertilization (IVF) and expressed support for the alternative method of conception.

IVF has been in the forefront after Alabama courts determined that a fertilized egg is a life and raised concerns about the future of the procedure for couples having difficulty conceiving.

“The Republican Party should always be on the side of the miracle of life and on the side of mothers, fathers and their beautiful babies,” Trump said. “IVF is an important part of this and our great Republican Party will always be with you in your quest for the ultimate joy in life.”

After Roe v. Wade has been overturned by the conservative-majority Supreme Court 6-3 in 2022, several states have implemented some of the most restrictive abortion laws seen in decades.

There were 15 states with so-called trigger laws, which were activated when Roe v. Wade was no longer the law of the land and immediately banned and criminalized abortion, with few exceptions.

Many of these states have recently implemented heartbeat bills, meaning women cannot receive abortion services and doctors cannot perform abortions approximately 5 to 6 weeks after the beginning of pregnancy, which is usually when a heartbeat can be detected by ultrasound.

Other states have passed laws allowing abortion during the first trimester of a pregnancy — much like policies Trump considered before announcing his opposition to a federal ban.
