Threat for multi-day severe weather extends to Chicago Monday

Millions of people from the Plains to the Midwest will be on alert for powerful thunderstorms capable of producing devastating wind gusts, large hail and possible tornadoes Monday, a day after the second derecho in a week that hit Kansas and Missouri with 100 mph winds. gusts and hail the size of baseballs.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, like Sunday, a trough is expected to move around a trough in the jet stream and will allow strong to severe thunderstorms to develop on Monday. These storms could cluster into several groups, increasing severe thunderstorm coverage.

Severe weather threat for Monday

Monday’s severe weather threat extends from Wyoming to the Great Lakes, but NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has highlighted two areas of concern where the risk of severe weather is greater.

More than 16 million people are classified as risk level 2 out of 5 on the SPC severe thunderstorm risk scale.

The first Tier 2 risk area spans the Plains and includes cities such as Cheyenne in Wyoming, Omaha and Lincoln in Nebraska, and Des Moines.

Another Level 2 threat exists in parts of southern Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, and northern Illinois, including Chicago.

However, more than 200,000 people in parts of southwest Nebraska, northwest Kansas and northeast Colorado were placed at Level 3 of 5 risk.

Some tornadoes will be possible within thunderstorms that develop Monday, but forecasters say they are more concerned about the risk of damaging wind gusts and large hail.

Tuesday’s Severe Weather Threat

The multi-day severe weather threat will continue through Tuesday and cover a much larger area of ​​the United States than in previous days.

Tens of millions of people from Texas to the Great Lakes are at risk of strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday, but the SPC is focusing on parts of the Midwest where the threat is much higher.

As of Monday afternoon, the SPC placed about 1.2 million people in Iowa, Illinois and far northeast Missouri at a Level 4 of 5 risk as of Tuesday.

This includes the cities of Davenport and Iowa City in Iowa, as well as Moline, Rock Island and Galesburg in Illinois.

More than 15.5 million people from Kansas and Nebraska to Wisconsin are at Level 3 of 5 risk Tuesday, which includes Kansas City, Mo., Des Moines, Iowa, Peoria, Ill. and La Lacrosse in Wisconsin.

Level 2 risk affects more than 26 million people in cities including Chicago, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Damaging wind gusts, large hail and possible tornadoes will once again be the primary threats from thunderstorms developing in the area Tuesday.

Some changes to the forecast are likely, but the FOX Forecast Center said it expects the ingredients to be in place for Wednesday and Thursday’s storms in the threat areas noted below.
