Thousands of illegal migrants skip bail checks to avoid threat of deportation, figures show

  • As of February, more than 33,000 illegal migrants were out on bail.

Illegal migrants facing flights to Rwanda are evading Interior Ministry controls to avoid arrest for deportation.

Fears grew last night that thousands of people in Britain could have gone missing in the first three months of this year.

The figures, released in response to a Freedom of Information request, show that 5,584 migrants released on bail refused checks a total of 56,243 times between January 1 and March 31.

Some 1,633 Albanians, included in the tally of the Interior Ministry’s immigration control teams, have avoided 16,028 checks, which take place regularly by telephone, online or face-to-face at police stations. The government said at the end of February that more than 33,000 illegal migrants were on bail at the time and therefore likely to be deported to Rwanda.

It means one in six people likely to be sent on flights to the East African country, due to start later this summer, have broken their bail rules and may have absconded .

Last year, an official internal briefing document from the Home Office warned of the risk of migrants disappearing “if the capacity to trace people is overwhelmed by demand”.

He adds: “The time between losing contact with individuals and initiating efforts to locate them can be long. The less time a person has spent in the UK, the smaller their footprint.

Tim Loughton, Conservative MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, warned in February of the “fairly strong possibility” that a significant number of the 33,085 migrants released on bail by that date could disappear because they were not found in secure deportation centers.

The Interior Ministry stressed: “People who have failed to report once can do so again in the following weeks. »

The Mail has learned the identity of a 28-year-old illegal Albanian migrant living “off the radar”. He is afraid of being put on a second flight to Rwanda after a minor breakdown last summer.

He and six others were taken to the steps of an Interior Ministry plane to be deported, but the flight was canceled after a last-minute ruling by the European Court of Human Rights.

He had been refused asylum despite claiming to be a victim of modern slavery who had fled Albania to avoid being drawn into a drug gang, according to immigration court documents. He deliberately lost contact with the Interior Ministry.
