ON THE COVER: How wildlife crossings protect both animals and people
To protect wildlife movement impeded by busy roads, a series of artificial overpasses and underpasses across the United States help animals large and small cross the street safely, avoiding collisions and saving Lives. About 1,500 of these structures have already been built. Correspondent Conor Knighton examines how they have protected the genetic diversity of animal populations while significantly reducing road deaths. He also visits the site of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing near Los Angeles, which, when completed, will help cougars cross one of the nation’s busiest highways.
