‘They will pay for that’ – Gary Neville tells Mark Clattenburg to resign from Nottingham Forest role after ‘mafia-like’ statement

Mark Clattenburg has been asked by Gary Neville to resign from his role as referee analyst in light of their astonishing statement on Sunday.

The Football Association has announced it is investigating a statement published on X by the club attacking the referee during their defeat at Everton because it called into question the integrity of an official.

In the statement, Forest accused the PGMOL of deploying a Luton Town fan in VAR for their six-point relegation romp at Goodison Park on Sunday, which finished 2-0 to the Toffees.

It read: “Three extremely poor decisions – three undelivered penalties – that we simply cannot accept.

“We warned the PGMOL that the VAR was a Luton fan before the match but they did not change it. Our patience was tested on several occasions. The NFFC will now consider their options.”

Forest had the opportunity to feel aggrieved just before half-time when they were denied a penalty despite the ball hitting the outstretched arm of Ashley Young in the Everton box.

Meanwhile, in separate incidents, Young was spared punishment for clipping Gio Reyna in the Everton box in the first half as well as colliding with Callum Hudson-Odoi in the Everton box. Everton.

But Neville is furious at the way the two-time European champions reacted to their setbacks, calling it a “scandal”.

The Manchester United legend also believes that former Premier League referee Clattenburg, who was hired as the club’s referee analyst in February, should distance himself from the statement by resigning from his position.

“It’s like a statement from a mafia gang, honestly…what are they playing at?” Neville told Sky Sports.

“I think everyone would have some sympathy for Nottingham Forest over some of the decisions they’ve been given this season, but they’ve been grabbing defeat after victory in the way they’ve handled it.

“It’s like a petulant child, it’s embarrassing. Some of the things they say, the deduction of cheating because there is a VAR official who is a Luton fan, is a scandal and they will pay for that.

“They will regret that as a football club in terms of their history and the way they present themselves. They have done it very well over a long period of time, they will regret that statement.

“The last line, ‘explore options’. I was very critical of Liverpool earlier this season after the Tottenham game – clubs need to stop saying that. They need to stop saying that.

“Sue? Replay the game? Take back points? What are the options? Your options are you can complain a little bit if you want, you can be upset but you have no options, it’s a sporting situation. .. unless we are actually going to consider referees and officials cheaters, which is not the case.

“Get rid of this ‘exploring all options’. Today Nottingham Forest have let themselves down in the middle of many bad decisions that go against them.”

“Mark Clattenburg must resign this evening (Sunday),” Neville added. “He must resign from his position at Nottingham Forest.

“Because if he sees these words coming out that question the integrity and basically call a VAR official a cheater because he supports a certain club, then he supports what is being said.

“I think he would lose all credibility with the match officials.

“He should step down tonight and distance himself from that statement in my opinion.”
