Golf fans have joked Scottie Scheffler’s dream quest for a second Masters title could be derailed by his unborn baby after the American revealed his wife is just weeks away from giving birth .

The 27-year-old arrived at Augusta as the favorite to start one of golf’s most iconic majors and had a strong first round on Thursday.

Shooting a sub-par 66 to finish the day second in the standings behind fellow American Bryson Dechambeau, Scheffler revealed his tournament could be interrupted by the imminent arrival of his first child.

The world No. 1 previously claimed victory at Augusta two years ago and is in a good position to secure another green jacket, having never finished outside the top 20 in his previous four visits to Augusta.

However, despite being one of the most followed players at the Masters, Scheffler wouldn’t hesitate to leave early if his baby decided to arrive early.

“If she calls me when it’s the 17th, then I better go home,” he told ESPN.

His wife Meredith had previously caddied for Scheffler during the par 3 warm-up competition that precedes the opening day of the Masters, but she was absent for the event earlier in the week.

Her sister, Sara, wore the clubs instead, and Scheffler later commented on the “crazy” circumstances of his wife’s pregnancy.

“It’s going to be pretty wild. I don’t think it’s hit any of us yet, but it’s an exciting time for us as a family,” Scheffler told Golf Digest.

“It’s been a pretty exciting seven months or so, and we can’t wait to get the baby out of there healthy and with a healthy mom, and then we’ll go from there,” he added.

Fans have since reacted hilariously to Scheffler’s potential early exit at Augusta with a post on X stating: “Great first day. If Scheffler gives birth, it could be wide open.

Another similarly added: “Can anyone stop Scottie Scheffler from winning the Masters this year? If her first child wants to get an early lead against the other babies, it might be her age. But Scottie’s game is probably the least work-intensive of any player on tour.

More comments piled in as Scheffler finished his impressive first lap with more posts reading, “Of course Scottie Scheffler is 2nd!” If he doesn’t have the baby, he might take it back.

“Perhaps the only hope for the estate would be for Ms. Scheffler to have this baby,” another online article said.

The American hotshot is scheduled to embark on his second round Friday afternoon at 1:48 p.m. alongside Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele.
