Johnson, the key to Canadian hopes

The United States and Canada meet in this first match of the T20 World Cup, with this clash taking place in Texas in the early hours of Sunday morning.

These two teams have met numerous times in recent years and the United States tends to have the upper hand.

Canada is the lowest-ranked nation in this tournament and recently lost a five-match T20 series between the nations 4-0.

The USA also beat Bangladesh 2-1 in a T20 series and therefore showed that they can mix with the more established nations.

As a result, the hosts are favorites to win, but their price tag doesn’t carry much weight and it may pay to look elsewhere for selection.

One of the only bright spots in Canada’s 4-0 loss to those opponents was the batting performance of Aaron Johnson, the only Canucks player to score more than 100 runs.

He has averaged 31 in this series and in ODIs and T20Is, he has an impressive average of 73.50 against USA’s leading bowlers.

Bring Johnson to No. 1 for Canada in this one.

Pooran in great shape

Nicholas Pooran has been one of West Indies’ best attacking weapons in recent years and he approaches this T20 World Cup in impressive style.

The 28-year-old was his country’s top scorer with 75 in his team’s win over Australia in the final warm-up match.

Pooran’s last four T20 scores are 75, 75, 61 and 48, with the last three being for Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League.

If the number three can replicate those efforts, he looks to be a solid bet to become West Indies’ top scorer in their opener against Papua New Guinea.

Joseph’s pace could be the key

Alzarri Joseph took 2/44 in West Indies’ win over Australia and his express pace could cause plenty of problems for this Papua New Guinea batting line-up.

The 27-year-old has a T20I average of 21.45 and is a strong contender to become the hosts’ leading wicket-taker in this opening match.
