Sydney church stabbing: Attack on Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel in Wakeley may be linked to resurfaced video showing stabbing victim making controversial remarks about Islam

An Assyrian Orthodox Church bishop who was stabbed during a live-streamed church service in Sydney spoke controversially about Islam in a video recorded four months ago.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was preaching at Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, western Sydney, when a 16-year-old boy approached the altar and allegedly stabbed him several times.

In another video showing the aftermath of the alleged terrorist attack, the boy said in Arabic: “If they hadn’t insulted my prophet, I wouldn’t have come here.” If he hadn’t been involved in my religion, I wouldn’t have come here.

The teenager may have been referring to the bishop’s appearance in a resurfaced video on religion made last December for the PBD podcast, hosted by American broadcaster Patrick Bet-David.

On the podcast, Archbishop Emmanuel questioned Islamic beliefs around Jesus, who he calls Isa, and said “the truth hurts.”

“Your book (the Koran) says that Isa, son of Mary, ascended alive to Heaven and that he will return to judge the dead and the living.

“If I ask a Muslim “Who judges?” », he will answer God.

“Well, you tell me that this prophet (Muhammad) will judge, so which is which? Did the prophet take the role of God, did God go on vacation and come to take his place?

The bishop said: “Isa is the living messiah, even (the Quran) says so.”

“Now let me ask you, my dear Muslim, if you claim that Isa is a prophet, then how come all the other prophets that you believe in – you believe in Moses, you believe in Isa, you believe in all the prophets of the Old Testament.

“How come none of the Old Testament prophets were called “the word of God” except Isa? For what?’

Bishop Emmanuel then spoke about the birth of Jesus to Mary and that he is the son of God.

“How is it that all the prophets and every human being on this planet were born of an earthly father and an earthly mother, while Jesus, son of Mary, was born of a virgin birth,” a- he declared.

“He has an earthly mother, but has no earthly father. For his father (is) who is in paradise.

The outspoken bishop added: “The very reason Muhammad failed is because he died. Their book says that…

“I know the truth hurts. I don’t offend people, I tell the truth. And if that offends you, I’m really sorry. Not. I’m not sorry about that.

He then told his fellow panelists on the podcast: “When you go to heaven, I can assure you… Muhammad will not greet you, Buddha will not greet you, (Hindu deity) Krishna will not greet you, because they don’t. will not do. .

‘There will be only one, who is the way, the truth and the life, and it will be Jesus Christ of Nazareth, who died for you and me.’

Bishop Emmanuel prayed for his alleged attacker moments after he was injured Monday evening.

The New South Wales Ambulance Service said four people were injured in the assault.

After the attack, an angry crowd of around 2,000 people gathered near the church, sparking riots and police struggling to maintain order.

More than 100 officers were eventually called to deal with the unrest, and two of them were taken to hospital with injuries, police said.

The bishop and his alleged attacker were operated on Tuesday morning.

The suspected teenage terrorist reportedly cut his finger during the alleged attack.

ASIO chief Mike Burgess said the attack “appears to be religiously motivated, but we are continuing our investigations”.
