Shane Lowry falls woefully short of golf history with record-breaking round at PGA Championship

Shane Lowry was set to become the first golfer in history to shoot 61 at a major championship on Saturday.

The 2019 Open champion and Ryder Cup hero entered contention in the third round with a stunning nine-under par 62.

No one has ever shot 61 in a major – and Lowry made an 11-foot putt on the 18th hole to post the lowest round ever at one of golf’s four biggest events.

The Irishman’s effort slipped just beyond the hole on the right side, triggering an anxiety reaction, but he still found himself one stroke behind leader Xander Schauffele at the end of his round.

This is the fifth 62 at a major championship following Branden Grace at the 2017 Open, Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler at the 2023 US Open, and then Schauffele again at this year’s PGA Championship.
