Sean Payton: Broncos could ‘definitely’ keep three quarterbacks

The Broncos named rookie Bo Nix the starter. Jarrett Stidham will start the final preseason game and play “eight to 12 snaps,” with Zach Wilson the rest of the game.

The team kept just two quarterbacks on its roster last year, but coach Sean Payton said Friday the Broncos could keep all three of the 53 quarterbacks this year.

“Sure, definitely.“I know the rule recently changed … if you do that, that third (quarterback) comes (on the game-day roster) without any count. But at the end of the day, I think the most important thing is you really look at your assets when you make that decision.”

All three quarterbacks competed for the starting job, with Nix, Stidham and Wilson splitting the first-team job throughout the offseason and the first week of training camp. Nix ultimately won the job, becoming the team’s first starting quarterback to start a season opener since John Elway in 1983.

The Broncos still list Stidham as the starter, with Wilson No. 2 and Nix No. 3 on their depth chart, which is obviously outdated.

“We have a pretty good idea of ​​where we’re going to go,” Payton said of the quarterback roster decisions. “I think we have a pretty good idea of ​​this particular facility. I’ve said it before, I like this facility.”
