Red Bull confirmed on Wednesday that design chief Adrian Newey will leave the Formula 1 team at the start of 2025 after 19 years.

It was widely reported last week that the 65-year-old was set to resign following a controversy involving allegations surrounding team principal Christian Horner.

The announcement is expected to spark a bidding war for Newey’s services, with Ferrari, soon to be joined by Lewis Hamilton, in pole position.

Newey, considered F1’s greatest designer and one of the main architects of Red Bull’s dominance, is expected to end his tenure in the “first quarter” of 2025, a statement said.

“Ever since I was a young boy, I wanted to become a designer of fast cars. My dream was to become a Formula 1 engineer, and I was lucky enough to make that dream a reality,” Newey said.

“For nearly two decades, it has been my great honor to have played a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progression from newcomer to multi-title team.”

Horner praised Newey, saying “all of our greatest moments of the last 20 years have come with Adrian’s hand on the technical tiller.”

“His vision and genius helped us win 13 titles in 20 seasons,” he said.

“His exceptional ability to conceptualize beyond F1 and bring broader inspiration to Grand Prix car design, his remarkable talent for embracing change and finding the most rewarding areas of the rules on which to focus, and His relentless drive to win has helped Red Bull Racing become a greater force than even the late (founder) Dietrich Mateschitz could have imagined.

Newey, who is expected to be in Miami for this weekend’s race, has also worked with championship-winning teams at Williams and McLaren.

It was reported that Newey was disturbed after Horner was accused of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior by a female employee.

The team principal was cleared by an internal investigation by Red Bull’s parent company before the employee was suspended. She is appealing this decision.

Last year, Max Verstappen and Red Bull had the most dominant season in F1 history, with the Dutchman winning 19 of 22 races. The team, meanwhile, won all but one race. This season they have won four of the first five races.
