Corpus Christi Police Department senior officer Antonio Contreras said officers responded to a call at 12:35 a.m. reporting a major vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and a truck in the 1500 block of Airline Road , arriving to find the motorcycle wrecked on the roadway.

The driver, aged 32, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger of the motorcycle, a 30-year-old woman, was transported to a local hospital where her life is in danger. She died in hospital shortly afterwards.

Traffic investigators were called to assist, with the truck driver remaining on scene before being transported to a local hospital for evaluation, Contreras said.

Police investigators learned the crash occurred while the motorcycle was heading south in the 1500 block of Airline Road when the truck, traveling north, failed to yield the right of way as the driver turned west to become a private driver, striking the motorcycle.

The driver of the truck, Carmen Guevara, 52, was later arrested and charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter.

In another motorcycle accident this week, a CCPD officer in the automobile unit was struck by a vehicle Tuesday while leading a funeral procession.

CCPD Police Lt. Eryca Gonzalez said the officer was heading south on Kostoryz Road when the other driver, heading east on Sacky Drive, attempted to turn north onto Kostoryz Road, hitting the police officer.

She said the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The accident remains under investigation. The driver who struck the officer was cited for failing to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle, as well as interfering with a funeral procession.

The two crashes come after a motorcycle crash that occurred early May 17 on South Padre Island Drive, killing a 21-year-old man who was traveling west on the highway near the intersection of Everhart Road when he struck a other vehicle. A third vehicle then struck the same vehicle as the one struck by the motorcyclist, but none of the other motorists were injured.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, 28% of the 18 fatal motor vehicle crashes in Corpus Christi in 2022 were due to speeding, and three of those fatal crashes were due to speeding motorcyclists. .

Other factors that contribute to motorcycle-related fatalities on city roads include high daily traffic volume, highway intersections and high number of lanes.
