Recent high school graduate dies after jumping into electrified lake on July 4: report
SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. (WKRC) – A recent high school graduate has reportedly died after jumping into an electrified lake.
Jesse Hamric, 18, died of a possible electrocution at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. According to the outlet, Hamric had just graduated from Steamboat Springs High School in Colorado. KDVR reported that Hamric was a popular baseball and football player and a beloved friend. “Since I first met this kid, I mean, he’s one of a kind,” longtime friend Alex Schwab told KDVR. “You see him and you always have a smile on your face.”
The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office told the station’s reporters that three individuals were at a private home with a dock in Huddleston, Virginia, during a gathering with family and friends. Witnesses told police they noticed Hamric in distress after he jumped into the water and felt a shock as they chased after him.
According to The New York PostRescuers arrived at the scene around 4 a.m. and took Hamric to hospital, where he later died. The post officeTwo of Hamric’s friends were slightly injured.
“I still can’t believe it. I’m so upset,” Schwab told KDVR.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of a recent Steamboat Springs High School graduate,” the statement read. “Please take a moment to care for yourself, seek support from those around you, and look out for one another. Our thoughts are with you all.”
Huddleston Volunteer Fire Chief William Kirby told WFXR that the three individuals were believed to have been electrocuted. According to KDVR, Chief Kirby said there was a boat lift present at the lake, which is being investigated as a potential cause of the possible electrocution.
According to WFXR, the investigation is ongoing.
