New footage has emerged showing Rasmus Hojlund’s perplexed reaction after Kobbie Mainoo’s dismissal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Burnley.

The United striker endured a difficult game at Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag’s Premier League woes continued and was taken off by his manager late in the second half.

Hojlund – who was part of a £72million summer move from Atalanta – formed a strong relationship with Mainoo and compatriot Alejandro Garnacho during his first campaign at the club.

The Danish star has been one of Ten Hag’s biggest supporters as the United manager tries to keep his job for another season, but he appeared confused when teammate Mainoo was sent off.

Footage taken from inside Old Trafford shows Hojlund walking around the pitch after being replaced by Amad Diallo, with Mainoo also taken off in the 65th minute for Scott McTominay.

Hojlund’s international colleague Christian Eriksen retained his place in midfield and the frustration was evident inside United’s stadium during the double change.

Boos then echoed around Old Trafford at full time as Zeki Amdouni converted from the penalty spot late in the match after an error by goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Hojlund was returning to the dugout when he saw Mainoo’s name appear on the fourth official’s board and shook his head displeased while pursing his lips.

United academy graduate Mainoo was one of the club’s players of the season after breaking into the first team and becoming a regular starter.

His performances earned him a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad and is now in contention for a place in the Three Lions squad at the upcoming European Championship.

United manager Ten Hag explained his substitutions after the match and claimed his team’s young players playing their first full senior season were susceptible to fatigue.

“I am the manager and I have to decide what the team needs,” Ten Hag said.

“It was the right decision and made perfect sense to bring out very young players who are in their first year in the Premier League and who are feeling some fatigue.

“They (Mainoo and Hohlund) have both been injured this season and I want to protect them,” he added.
