Ralf Rangnick has confirmed he is “in contact with Bayern Munich” over a decision to take over as manager of the German club when Thomas Tuchel leaves this summer.

The 65-year-old is set to lead Austria this summer at Euro 2024 and while he admitted he will remain “fully focused” on the international team, it appears the German coach is in contention to take over. belongs to the Bavarian club.

Bayern announced earlier this season that their current boss Tuchel would leave the club, amid an indifferent season which saw the Bavarian side miss out on winning the Bundesliga for the first time in 11 years.

Rangnick has been working on the international stage since leaving Manchester United after a dismal five-month tenure at Old Trafford. But the German coach has now revealed there is a chance he could return to management at club level.

“There have been contacts from the Bayern Munich side and I have informed the Austrian Football Association,” the former United caretaker manager told Austrian media outlet 90 Minuten.

“We have a very trusting relationship. My focus is on the Austrian national team. We are fully focused on the European Championships.

“I feel very good here. At the moment there is no reason to tackle this problem intensively.

The German coach added that he would first have to discuss any potential decision with the Austrian FA.

“If Bayern say ‘we want you'”. And then I should also ask myself “do I really want this?” “. If I want to do something else, I will first discuss it with the Austrian Federation,” Rangnick said.

Bayern are one of several clubs, including Liverpool, who are currently looking for a new manager.

The 32-time Bundesliga champions reportedly had several names on their coaching shortlist, including Unai Emery, Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann – all of whom have apparently rejected the opportunity to join the club.

Tuchel had agreed a two-year deal to manage Bayern in 2023, but that deal was cut short by the club as his side won 21 games, drew three and lost six games in the Bundesliga this season.

Rangnick, meanwhile, had a dismal tenure in charge of Man United, winning 10 games, drawing seven and losing seven matches. As Erik ten Hag worked to lay United’s foundations, Rangnick was seen as a stopgap by some United players, with United similarly abandoning a two-year plan to keep him at the club.

Unai Emery has seemingly denied rumors he could take over as manager of the German club.

Interestingly, the German hadn’t actually managed a team before joining Man United, having worked as boss of RB Leipzig between 2018 and 2019.
