This season’s Championship promotion race has been one of the most exciting in recent memory and there are sure to be more twists and turns to come.
Leeds United had to wait until last weekend. Their match only took place on Monday evening, when a topsy-turvy encounter against Middlesbrough ended 4-3 in their favor.
Leicester City beat Southampton 5-0 the following day, meaning Leeds are four points behind the Foxes. An additional victory for Enzo Maresca’s men will allow them to cross the finish line.
So it looks like a straight battle between Leeds and Ipswich Town for second place. The former hold an advantage on points as things stand, having accumulated 90 to Ipswich’s 89. Leeds also have an advantage on goal difference.
However, Ipswich still have three games to play and Leeds have just two. Los Blancos will feel they need to win their remaining two matches to have any chance of an automatic return to the Premier League.
The bookmakers have Leeds as narrow favorites for a top-two finish, but Ipswich’s fate is in their hands. Nine points from nine would make the Tractor Boys uncatchable and send Leeds to the play-offs.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. The play-offs offer a second chance to the team that will not benefit from automatic promotion, but the psychological blow of failure will be difficult to overcome.
A victory over Queens Park Rangers would boost Leeds’ chances and put pressure on Ipswich, who face a tricky test at Hull City on Saturday night.
Not that the journey from Leeds to Loftus Road is easy. QPR also have something to play for: a win on Friday would secure their Championship status for another year. This matchup has implications on both ends of the table.

If Queens Park Rangers avoid relegation to League One, they will have Marti Cifuentes to thank.
When he replaced Gareth Ainsworth on October 30, QPR were second to last in the Championship. If the season had started as soon as he was appointed, they would currently be 10th.
Four points above the dreaded dotted line, QPR would still be well placed to stay up even if they lost to Leeds on Friday and Coventry City last weekend.

It will be difficult to avoid defeat in this one. Consistency has eluded Leeds (and other promotion candidates) in recent weeks, but victory over Middlesbrough will have done them a lot of good.

Leeds have the best defensive record in the championship. They have conceded a league-low 37 goals and kept a league-high 19 clean sheets. Looking at the expected goals, no one conceded fewer chances than Farke’s team.
Still, we’re thinking about Queens Park Rangers’ chances of finding the back of the net on Friday. If they want to achieve this while ultimately being beaten by Leeds, there will need to be more than 2.5 goals in this game.
In 12 games at Loftus Road since the turn of the year, QPR have scored in 10 of them. Visitors to this corner of the capital don’t often record a clean sheet.
Leeds, for their part, have conceded in five of their last six games, including three in that defeat to Middlesbrough last time out.

Leeds need their big players to deliver over the next two weekends. Although he is only 22 years old, Summerville belongs to this group.
