Accusations of plagiarism against Kjerkol first surfaced in late January. Rather than stopping immediately, Kjerkol chose to wait for the judgment of the University of the North, which announced that it would re-examine his 2021 thesis on health governance.
Pressure increased on Thursday when it was revealed to the Norwegian press that a committee reviewing Kjerkol’s thesis had revoked it for plagiarism.
Kjerkol is the second Norwegian minister to resign this year after being accused of plagiarism in his academic work.
In January, Sandra Borch of the Agrarian Party resigned as minister of higher education after a student revealed on social media that she had copied much of her law master’s thesis.
