Passenger killed after pickup crashes down embankment in San Pasqual Valley

A 47-year-old passenger died after being ejected from a vehicle when the driver left the road, rolled down an embankment and ended up in a citrus grove in the San Pasqual neighborhood Tuesday evening, according to police in San Diego.

The crash happened around 11:20 p.m. on San Pasqual Valley Road near San Pasqual Academy, according to Officer David O’Brien.

A 25-year-old man was driving a gray 1999 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound when the vehicle veered around a curve, crossed double yellow lines and went down a 50-foot embankment into an orchard, O’Brien said. His passenger was ejected during the rollover and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was transported by helicopter to a hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening. Police are awaiting test results to determine whether the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, O’Brien said.

Officers from the Traffic Division responded to the scene and conducted the investigation.
