Osasuna striker Ante Budimir claimed the worst penalty ever after missing a disastrous late attempt against Valencia on Monday night.

The Croatian had the chance to salvage a draw for the La Liga hosts in the dying embers of stoppage time after initially winning a controversial penalty.

Budimir had the chance to snatch a point for Osasuna after receiving a kick to the back of the leg from Valencia defender Hugo Guillamon.

He strode forward confidently as El Sadar Stadium held its breath in anticipation, but wished the ground would swallow him up moments later as the ball nestled in the hands of goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Budimir seemed torn between going for power or trying to pass the ball through the middle of the goal and ended up almost tripping when he went to shoot.

After hitting the ground as he was about to kick the ball, Budimir’s effort failed to even reach the goal as a grateful Mamardashvili got up from the ground to collect the ball then that he had already dived.

Budimir and his Osasuna teammates couldn’t believe what had happened as a commentator began describing the comical moment to stunned viewers.

“He missed it, and he not only missed it, it’s the worst penalty you’ve seen so far this season and maybe ever,” the Premier Sports commentator said.

“Poor old Ante Budimir, what a moment and what a terrible kick that was.

“Valencia fans will feel justice has been done, Osasuna fans applaud the player but this is his worst moment of the campaign.”

The torrid effort sparked further shocked reactions in the home team’s dugout as staff sat with their heads in their hands, unable to believe what had just happened.

Comments flooded social media in reaction to the horror penalty as the Osasuna star – who has scored 17 goals in all competitions – waited painfully for the referee to blow the full-time whistle.

“I looked at the pitch like it was somehow to blame,” one comment on X said.

Another similar message added: “Oh no. What is he trying? while a third said: “he deserved that for diving for the penalty”.
