A 36-year-old man was killed in a shooting on a Chula Vista street Saturday evening and officers arrested a suspect shortly afterward, a police spokesman said.
Chula Vista police responded around 11 p.m. to multiple reports of shots fired on Center Street near Third Avenue, Sgt. » Anthony Molina said in a statement.
Arriving officers were flagged down by witnesses near a parked truck, Molina said. The victim was found inside the truck suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.
The man was taken to hospital, where he died. His name has been withheld pending notification of his family.
Witnesses told police the suspected shooter fled the scene in a white pickup truck with distinct markings, Molina said.
Around midnight, an officer spotted a vehicle matching the description traveling west on H Street. Police stopped the truck and arrested the driver and a passenger.
Police said one of the occupants, Christian Benavides, 32, was in possession of a gun and was arrested. He was being held without bail in the county jail on suspicion of murder.
It was not immediately clear whether the second person inside the truck had also been arrested.
