Newcastle player ‘will do his best’ to leave club this summer after best year of career on loan

Ryan Fraser has admitted he will ‘do his best’ to secure a permanent move to Southampton this summer.

The Scottish winger is a Newcastle United player and he still has one year left to finish his contract at St James’ Park.

But given he hasn’t played for Eddie Howe’s side since October 2022, the writing is on the wall for the former Bournemouth star.

Intending to revive his career, Fraser joined Championship side Southampton on loan where he scored eight goals to help the Saints return to the Premier League.

Having played a key role in their play-off final success against Leeds, Fraser’s 173 appearances in the top flight would undoubtedly be a big boost for the Saints next season.

Asked by the Daily Echo if he would be a Southampton player next season, Fraser laughed: “I will do my best.”

Discussing promotion and play-off final success with the Saints this season, Fraser said: “It’s probably the best feeling I’ve had in my career.

“Obviously I’ve had other promotions, but this one is nowhere close. It’s by far the best feeling I’ve ever had.

“I’ve been saying it for so long now, but it’s just the family, the spirits, the fans, the gaffer, the guys – I could just go on and it’s just, yeah, no better feeling.

“A lot went into this game and the guys were brilliant, just defending for our lives and showing a different side of us.”

He continued: “I think we push each other. And the guys that we are, we’re so close.

“The manager said it in the locker room, exactly what the guys have probably had as a team over the last couple of seasons compared to where we are now.

“We don’t have any bad eggs. Everyone is the best, the best. The best players too, but the best before that.”
