New footage shows Pep Guardiola furiously grilling Man City stars before epic comeback against Tottenham

Pep Guardiola’s impassioned team speech helped inspire a crucial comeback in Manchester City’s treble-winning campaign.

The Citizens were in a mini-crisis in January 2023, and things looked to be going from bad to worse when they trailed Tottenham 2-0 before the break at the Etihad.

After being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Southampton and losing to Manchester United, City knew they could not afford another defeat.

In behind-the-scenes footage from the Netflix documentary “Together: Treble Winners,” Erling Haaland can be seen entering the locker room and angrily kicking a bottle.

Guardiola then came in and berated his players for their complacent performance.

He could be heard saying, “There’s something inside that you guys find. No exception, all of you, that we’re missing. Something that’s missing, that’s missing inside.

“Have to say it? No. In this situation, you have to resolve it. Where is your passion, where is your energy or something inside that says, ‘Friends, I’m going to survive.’

“Of course, I have now proven that you don’t want to win the Premier League.

“And me for one… (addresses Rico Lewis) 18 years old, we have the guy with more passion and energy to do it. He committed ten fouls, he stood up.

“He fought against (Pierre-Emile) Hojbjerg, with Hojbjerg, and no one defends him. The guy wants all the ball. He is aggressive without the ball.

“I give gifts? You think I give gifts? I don’t give gifts to my friends. You deserve it (Lewis).”

Guardiola’s team talk clearly worked with Julian Alvarez, Erling Haaland and a double from Riyad Mahrez giving City a 4-2 victory in a match which served as a catalyst for the success that followed.

But that didn’t stop him from doubling down on his doubts during his post-match press conference, declaring: “I want a reaction from the whole club, from all the reactions. Not just from the playing staff and everyone. the world.

“We are a team of happy flowers. I don’t want to be happy flowers, I want to beat Arsenal. If we play this way, Arsenal (in the next match) will destroy us.”

Man City would go on to win the Premier League, where they emerged victorious in 15 of their next 17 outings.

They also won the FA Cup and Champions League last season, before winning the Club World Cup to be officially crowned the best team in world football.
