Netflix Orders Horror Series From Duffer Brothers and Haley Z. Boston

Netflix has greenlit a series Something very bad is going to happena horror drama executive produced by The Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt, through their overall deal with Netflix for Upside Down Pictures. The series is created by Haley Z. Boston, who will serve as executive producer and showrunner of her own passion project series at the age of 29.

Additionally, Andrea Sperling (Transparent, Murder at the End of the World) has been tapped to produce the series under an overall deal it signed with Netflix.

The series’ official synopsis makes a cheeky reference to its title: Something very bad is going to happen is an atmospheric horror series set at a wedding, following a newlywed couple in the week leading up to their ill-fated nuptials. This isn’t a spoiler – just read the title…

“We were blown away when we first read Haley’s script. She is a major new talent with a singular voice – her writing is twisted, terrifying, funny and just… very Haley,” said the Duffer brothers. “We feel so lucky to be producing her first show and can’t wait to share her vision with the world.”

Boston is a local Netflix talent with a genre pedigree. She has previously written on the streamer Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities And All new cherry flavor.

“We are thrilled to once again collaborate with our dream partners Matt, Ross and Hilary to bring this unexpected and thrilling story to life through Haley’s unique and compelling vision,” said Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s Vice President of Scripted Series (U.S. and Canada).

The Duffer Brothers are currently in production on the final season of their Netflix mega-hit Stranger things. They are also creative producers of the Olivier Award-winning West End production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Since launching Upside Down Pictures with Hilary Leavitt in 2022, the company has developed several series, including The districts first to enter production this fall. Casting is currently underway. Upside Down’s development includes a live-action series adaptation of Death threat and one Strange things animated series.

Boston’s first film as a director, The logs on the beach kill, premiered at SXSW this year as part of the Narrative Shorts competition. It is represented by Kaplan/Perrone and Yorn, Levine, Barnes. The Duffers are with CAA and Yorn, Levine, Barnes.
