A Massachusetts man was attacked by a grizzly bear and hospitalized while in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

The incident occurred Sunday afternoon, according to the National Park Service. Teton Interagency Dispatch Center rescue crews received a report that a 35-year-old Massachusetts man had been seriously injured by a bear in the area of ​​Signal Mountain Summit Road.

Park rangers and rescue personnel responded to the scene. They provided emergency treatment to the victim before he was airlifted to a nearby ambulance. He was then brought to St. John’s Health, a hospital in Jackson, Wyoming.

The man’s name has not been released. He is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the National Park Service.

Park rangers and biologists are conducting a follow-up investigation. Based on preliminary results, they believe the attack occurred after a surprise encounter with two grizzly bears. Only one of them attacked the man.

Signal Mountain Summit Road is a narrow, winding road that climbs 800 feet and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The Signal Mountain road and trail are currently closed to the public.
