Mason Mount grabs first Premier League goal since 2022 as Brentford dent Manchester United’s top four hopes

Manchester United escaped with a 1-1 draw at Brentford – although they took the lead in injury time.

The Red Devils thought they had snatched all three points at the Gtech Community Stadium after Mason Mount opened his account for the club.

Striking low into the bottom corner in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time, the ex-Chelsea star scored in the Premier League for the first time since December 2022.

But they couldn’t hold on to the victory, as Brentford equalized three minutes later after Kristoffer Ajer fired in a cutback from Ivan Toney Toney.

And it was nothing less than what the Bees deserved after managing 31 shots on goal to the Red Devils’ 11.

Thomas Frank’s men hit the woodwork four times in west London and will wonder how they didn’t emerge victorious.

Brentford are also the first team this season to boast at least 80 touches in the opposition box.

It was another disappointing performance from United, who appear to have added to their injury list with Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof forced out.

The result leaves United in sixth place – 11 points off the top four and eight behind fifth-placed Tottenham.

As for Brentford, they have moved five points clear of the bottom three as they look for their first win since February 10.

Erik ten Hag admitted to talkSPORT that his side were lucky to come away from Brentford with something.

He commented: “That’s what I told the players: we didn’t deserve to win. But if you win, then you have to cross the finish line.

Gerard Pique reveals the differences between being managed by Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola, but explains a key point they have in common

“We are experienced in such situations and normally we do very well in such circumstances.

“But today we conceded the equalizer and it’s very disappointing.”

Former Chelsea left-back Scott Minto has heavily criticized United as the full-time whistle approaches.

He said on talkSPORT commentary: “I tell you, it’s a 5-1 game. United came away with a point.

“United scored so late, they must have seen it, they have to get the win and the three points, whether you steal the win, or if it’s a daylight robbery, it doesn’t matter, you walk away with victory.

“You don’t concede a goal when you have just taken the lead in the 96th minute.”

He added: “Even if United had won, it would have papered over the cracks.

“It just wasn’t good enough from a Manchester United team, and as far as Erik ten Hag is concerned, he is currently on trial until the end of the season.

“It wasn’t a good enough performance.”
