Martin Brundle Mistakes No. 1 NBA Draft Pick for NFL Legend Patrick Mahomes in Hilarious March on Miami Grand Prix Grid

Formula 1 isn’t Formula 1 without Martin Brundle’s pre-race grid walks, and they have rarely been funnier than the one that happened ahead of the 2022 Miami Grand Prix.

The fifth round of the 2022 F1 season took place in South Florida for the first time and in a sport normally full of stars, things have reached a whole new level.

Celebrities such as David Beckham, Michael Jordan and Michelle Obama were in attendance, but when it comes to motorsport, they have nothing to do with Brundle.

A former teammate of big names such as Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna, the Sky Sports pundit is a fixture at Grand Prix weekends but has never covered one like this.

There were great fears that the presenter would again fight with music stars, but in fact it was about athletes, being wrong not only about the player, but also about the sport.

Brundle thought he was interviewing Kansas City Chiefs star NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but didn’t get a response when he approached him.

After a brief discussion about what it means to be in the middle of the grid, Brundle suddenly realized his mistake, probably via a voice in his earpiece.

“OK. He’s not Patrick,” Brundle said. “That’s why he ignored me at first.

“What is your name sir?” Brundle added politely.

“Paolo Banchero,” replied the basketball player.

“Alright, I thought I was talking to someone else.” Sorry about that,” Brundle replied embarrassed.

Banchero was selected first overall by the Orlando Magic in the 2022 NBA Draft just over a month later and has since become the Rookie of the Year.

However, he didn’t seem too offended and even managed an exchange with Mahomes on X – formerly known as Twitter.

However, the drama didn’t stop there, with Brundle going on to meet music stars.

“It’s a man called DJ Khaled,” Brundle said calmly as the 64-year-old approached the global hip hop superstar.

After Brundle introduced himself, DJ Khaled responded, “Everything’s fine.

“We, in Miami, are my home, the best city in the world and the whole world is there for this great event, F1, family, fun, good energy, superstars, icons.”

After a brief interruption, Brundle, rather shocked, left it at that.

“I’m not going to add more,” he said. “Beautifully summed up, Sir.”

After rounding the main straight, Brundle then came across another music star, Pharrell Williams, who lent his support to Lewis Hamilton.

“I love Ferrari cars, but Lewis is my brother,” Williams said.

Fortunately for Pharrell, his two loves will be confirmed at Miami 2025 when Hamilton swaps his Mercedes team for the Scuderia.
