The day started like any other for Hogan Windish. It ended very differently.
The Mariners’ first base prospect made baseball history Tuesday night, hitting four home runs and nine runs for Double-A Arkansas in a 9-4 victory over Springfield at Hammons Field.
And as if that memorable performance wasn’t exceptional enough, the 25-year-old accomplished something that no other player in the game’s professional history has done.
Since RBIs became an official statistic in 1920, Windish and former Major Leaguer Mike Greenwell were the only players to drive in all nine of their club’s runs in a game. Greenwell, a two-time All-Star during his 12 years with the Red Sox, did it nearly 28 years ago on September 2, 1996, his final season as a major league player.
This was the second four-homer game in Travelers franchise history. Tyrone Horne bludgeoned four on July 27, 1998, while the club was affiliated with St. Louis.
So what did Windish do differently that might have contributed to his record-breaking night?
“I took a nap on the bus, unpacked when we got to the hotel and went to the stadium,” he said. “It was just another day at the office, and I in no way had a feeling it would turn out like this. Honestly, I’m on cloud nine right now and I still haven’t completely figured out what’s going on. ‘happened.”
Windish, who entered the contest with three home runs in 58 games, walked in the first, then kicked things off with the second grand slam of his career over the left-center field wall in the third. But what would have been a memorable moment in itself for most players was just an appetizer for the Pinehurst, North Carolina native.
Windish reached the fence in right center with a two-run homer in the fifth followed by another in the same vicinity two innings later. Accomplishing something no Minor League player had done in nearly two years, the UNC Greensboro product circled the bases again, leading off the ninth with his fourth goal of the game, this time at center.
“I didn’t know for sure (that I hit in the ninth), but I knew I caught it well,” Windish said. “I thought there was a good chance with the way the night had gone up to that point. When I saw him go over the wall, such joy came over me. I was floating around the bases .”
