Manchester City vs. Chelsea Predictions

There are still ways Manchester City can make more history this season, but one particular path to the record books is now closed.

City were seeking to become the first European club to win the “double treble”, meaning the league title, first domestic cup and Champions League in consecutive campaigns.

Pep Guardiola’s side lead the way in the Premier League and are also favorites to triumph in the FA Cup, but the title holders were knocked out of Europe’s premier club competition in midweek.

In many ways, they were unlucky to taste defeat against Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

After a 3-3 draw in Spain last week, City dominated the second leg at the Etihad Stadium. Madrid took the lead in the first half, but after that it was one-way traffic.

Yet even though City equalized through Kevin De Bruyne, they were unable to score the all-important third goal of the evening. Madrid held on for 120 minutes, then won on penalties.

City will be feeling depressed after their Champions League exit, but Guardiola will have spent the last few days reiterating to his players that this could yet be a successful season for City.

A domestic double would certainly be enough to fit that description and Guardiola’s men are eight wins away from achieving it.

Still, it could be argued that Chelsea are the toughest opponent Manchester City could have faced in the FA Cup semi-final.

Manchester United are above the Blues in the Premier League table, but not by much, and Chelsea recently beat Erik ten Hag’s side at Stamford Bridge. Coventry City, the other semi-finalists, are a Championship team.

The FA Cup holders should take nothing for granted ahead of their first trip to Wembley since August.

Manchester City vs Chelsea Betting Tips

Manchester City are the favorites but they won’t necessarily have everything their way in this one.

Draw – 16/5 (Copybet)

Chelsea came up short on their last trip to Wembley, losing 1-0 to a young Liverpool side in the EFL Cup final.

They will look to write this poorly against Manchester City, who they have played quite well against this season.

These two teams played out a 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge in November, before Chelsea held City to a 1-1 draw in the second leg earlier this year.

For all their struggles this season, Chelsea have tended to raise their level of play against the biggest teams in the country. They beat Manchester United and Tottenham, and drew with Liverpool, Arsenal and City (twice).

Chelsea had more time to prepare for this match and their last encounter, a 6-0 defeat to Everton, was not as grueling as the two-hour duel between City and Real Madrid.

It may take extra time, or even penalties, for this FA Cup semi-final to be decided.

Both teams score – 5/8 (Copybet)

As we mentioned above, there have been goals from both sides in the previous two meetings between Manchester City and Chelsea this season.

Erling Haaland had a quiet evening against Real Madrid and it is not impossible that he will start this semi-final on the bench, but City have punch in attack with or without the Norwegian international.

Guardiola’s men haven’t been as solid defensively of late, however. They have now gone five clean sheets and, in domestic matches away from the Etihad, have managed just two shutouts in their last 11.

Chelsea have shown some signs of improvement of late, scoring at least two goals in each of their last six Premier League matches – as well as in four of their five FA Cup matches so far.

Both goalkeepers may have to recover the ball in the back of the net at least once on Saturday.

Cole Palmer will score at any time – 9/4 (Copybet)

Few tears were shed when Manchester City sold Cole Palmer to Chelsea last summer. But many City fans now wish the move did not happen.

It’s true that Palmer probably wouldn’t have the same impact if he had stayed at the Etihad, not least because the competition for places there is fiercer.

But the 21-year-old is thriving in a new environment. A spectacular four-goal haul against Everton last time out took him to 20 goals for the Premier League season, level with Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot.

Palmer has ice in his veins and he never seems fazed, so we can expect him to rise to the occasion against his former club Wembley.

He is Chelsea’s designated shooter (despite a tussle between Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson when Pochettino’s side got one against Everton), which only increases his chances of putting the ball in the back of the net.
