Manchester United win the FA Cup! ‘Dead man walking’ manager Erik Ten Hag defies the odds as Prince William watches teenagers Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo score against Man City at Wembley.

Man United won the FA Cup after beating derby rivals Man City 2-1 in the final at Wembley, as goals from academy graduates Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho ensured the iconic trophy would return to the red half from Manchester.

Prince William was in attendance as he carried out his duties as President of the Football Association and was introduced to both sets of players by respective captains Bruno Fernandes and Kyle Walker as the teams walked out onto the hallowed ground.

The Duke of Cornwall then took his place in the stands and was joined by his son and future heir to the throne, Prince George, both dressed in matching suits.

Thousands of people traveled to the English capital from the northwest for a repeat of last year’s FA Cup final which Manchester City won on this occasion, en route to a historic treble.

However, pre-match brawls between the two sets of supporters threatened to spoil the occasion with one group clashing near a bus stop in Station Road, Harrow, before the match.

A shirtless fan was seen struggling on the ground at a bus stop as traffic came to a standstill before more men piled in. Kicks and punches were thrown – and bottles were thrown – during the shocking scenes in the hours leading up to the long-awaited finale.

Supporters of both teams were allocated certain pubs for drinks in north-west London before the match, but this did not prevent clashes in the street with police concerned about possible violence.

Meanwhile, popular celebrities, including former Olympian and Dancing on Ice star Greg Rutherford, soaked up the pre-match atmosphere in the luxurious surroundings of Club Wembley’s Bobby Moore restaurant.

Other notable celebrities, including Love Island reality TV duo Andrew Page and Tasha Ghouri, also posed for photos in the luxurious surroundings of one of Wembley’s bars.

The majority of pre-match attention was not on the action on the pitch but rather on the future of Man United manager Erik ten Hag, who is reportedly on the verge of being sacked.

It is claimed the Dutchman will see his £9m-a-year contract terminated whatever the outcome. It is yet to be confirmed whether he will be allowed to continue or not.

If he is sacked, it would be a cruel twist of fate for the 54-year-old after fellow Dutchman Louis van Gaal was fired by the club in 2016 amid United’s FA Cup celebrations.

Ten Hag was defiant before the match in the face of adversity, saying in an interview with a publication in his native Holland that United’s sporting board – led by British petrochemical billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe – wanted he leads their revolution.

However, United have already begun their inquiries with other managers, including former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel, who is keen to return to the Premier League, while Gareth Southgate has also been mooted as a potential successor.

Ten Hag sprinted onto the pitch at full time, letting out a roar of relief as his team’s triumph was confirmed following their best performance of the season.

The former Ajax head coach showed no signs of saying goodbye as he collected his winner’s medal in the upper stands at Wembley, shaking hands with the club’s majority owner Avram Glazer, from Ratcliffe and legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Contradicting emotions were on the faces of City players as they received their runners-up medals, many of them, including Phil Foden, removing their silverware before returning to the field.

One of those not in contention for a place in his team however was Marcus Rashford after the United superstar was a shock omission from Southgate following a difficult campaign.

Rashford was determined to prove his worth to both club and country and started brightly, tackling numerous challenges with fellow Englishman Kyle Walker and making key contributions in the build-up to both goals.

The 26-year-old was then withdrawn as Ten Hag opted for fresher legs in attack as City desperately looked for a way back into the game.

Belgian winger Jeremy Doku inspired hopes of a late comeback after scoring deep into the game, but that would only count as a consolation as United kept their cool and could give Ten a lifeline Hag.
