Man City win double as Phil Foden and Bunny Shaw support Arsenal and Chelsea at FWA Awards

Phil Foden and Bunny Shaw have won their respective Men’s and Women’s Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year awards.

Foden has been Manchester City’s standout player this season as Pep Guardiola’s side continue their quest for a fourth consecutive Premier League title and a second consecutive league and FA Cup double.

The 23-year-old collected 42% of the vote, beating Arsenal star Declan Rice into second, to win this year’s award and succeed teammate Erling Haaland.

Meanwhile, Man City striker Shaw capped a fine campaign by winning the women’s award.

Shaw has scored 21 goals and three assists in 18 WSL matches this season as Manchester City move closer to the title.

She beat Chelsea star Lauren James to the award.

This is the second time City have won the award in both the men’s and women’s categories following the success of Raheem Sterling and Nikita Parris in 2019.

Foden finished ahead of Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, while his Man City teammate Rodri came third in the voting. The rest of the top six consisted of Martin Odegaard, Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer.

Foden has scored 16 times in the Premier League this season and five goals during City’s run to the Champions League quarter-finals.

The 23-year-old is expected to enjoy further success in the coming weeks, with City closing in on domestic honors before England begin their quest to win Euro 2024 in Germany next month.

Shaw’s triumph came after a record number of votes were cast for this category.

Chelsea’s Shaw and James collected almost 80 per cent of the vote between them, with Man City’s Alex Greenwood finishing third and Yui Hasegawa, Elisabeth Terland and Khiara Keating making up the top six.

The Jamaican’s goals have helped City rise to the top of the WSL and, although she is currently sidelined with injury, she looks destined to finish the season as title winners.
