Liverpool have reportedly met with Ruben Amorim’s agent as the Sporting Lisbon boss moves closer to becoming the club’s new manager.

The search for a successor to Jurgen Klopp has been underway since the German shocked the sporting world by announcing in January that he would step down at the end of the season.

Xabi Alonso initially appeared to be the club’s number one contender, with his Bayer Leverkusen side flying high in the Bundesliga and en route to a first-ever league title.

However, the Spaniard dropped a bombshell at his former club last month after confirming his intention to stay at the BayArena.

As such, attention has turned to Amorim, who reportedly performed well in Liverpool’s data tests.

According to a report from Portuguese football journalist Pedro Sepulveda, a meeting between the two parties to negotiate the final terms of his future contract is expected to take place on Monday.

However, Sepulveda also noted that the club has yet to officially contact Sporting regarding a move for Amorim.

Asked at the start of the week about speculation linking him to a transfer, the 39-year-old former midfielder refused to commit his future to the Portuguese club.

“No, I can’t guarantee that. I don’t want to talk too much about my future. But I won’t argue or put pressure on Sporting, I owe the club a lot.

Mail Sport reported on Friday that Amorim was willing to consider approaches from Premier League sides, with a number of clubs monitoring him.

After brief spells at Casa Pia and Braga following the end of his playing career, Amorim was appointed manager of Sporting in March 2020.
