Lionesses star Georgia Stanway hints at future career change that offers ‘escape from football’

The Bayern Munich star has been a sensation since arriving in Bavaria in 2022 and has scored six times for the club.

But off the field, she enjoys learning the art of tattooing with her friend and shop owner Linus.

“It’s going well,” Stanway told BBC Sport when asked about his new venture. “In recent weeks it has become more serious.

“I’ve always had an interest in tattooing, I have a lot of them myself and it’s always something I’ve loved in terms of looking, planning and finding new designs.”

Stanway ended his career at Manchester City after seven seasons at the club. She admits that moving abroad appealed to her the most to be able to fulfill her burning desire to experience a new culture.

“I moved to Munich after the Euros because I was ready for something new,” Stanway added. “One thing I wanted to do was experience a new culture.

“I am so happy with the decision I made to come here. I enjoy my role within the team and off the pitch as well. I feel like I’ve found my home.

“When I arrived in Munich, the first thing I did was find a tattoo shop. You feel quite alone when you move abroad. I’m not someone who talks about my feelings too much.

“I’m not the most creative in terms of drawing but I like the idea of doodles and characters.”

Stanway had the opportunity to get his very first tattoo on his skin in front of the BBC cameras.

Linus kindly offered part of his leg to the midfielder so she could practice her skills and she admitted her nerves far exceeded those displayed on a football pitch.

“It’s much more distressing,” she said. “Usually I’m on the pitch with 11 other people and people cheering me on from the sidelines, but right now I feel so alone.

Chelsea women’s manager Emma Hayes pushes Arsenal women’s manager Jonas Eidvall into a heated exchange at full-time during the Conti Cup final.

“Linus is the guy who taught me from the very beginning, so I feel good that he’s the one getting the tattoo.”

“Tattooing has become a big part of my life because it’s almost like an escape from football. In football you can find yourself in your own bubble and think about it constantly.

“It’s an incredible feeling to get to this point. For someone to give up their body for me. It’s a special feeling and I appreciate it immensely.
