Landslide in Papua New Guinea affects 7,900 people and survivors’ hope dwindles

Thousands of people in northern Papua New Guinea needed shelter or aid after a landslide swept through their villages, burying residents and houses. Hopes of finding survivors have dimmed Pacific island nation, with unstable terrain and a collapsed bridge hampered the research.

Almost 7,900 people – many under the age of 16 – have been affected, the United Nations said Tuesday, including residents near the disaster zone who may need to be evacuated and those in need of food, clothing and medicine.
