Kevin Costner Shares His Approach to Character Development in Film

Oscar-winning director Kevin Costner has joined Josh Horowitz’s film. Happy Sad Confused podcast for a live recording at the 92nd Street Y in New York, accompanied by audio Horizon: an American saga with Sam Worthington, Abbey Lee and Luke Wilson.

During the in-depth discussion, Costner emphasized his commitment to creating well-rounded characters, particularly women, who challenge traditional Western genre archetypes.

“When you start writing, you’re like, ‘Where’s the woman?’ It just drove the story in every single plot,” he said. “It just seemed so easy to me. I mean, I just couldn’t conceive of a scene that didn’t involve women or a young girl being raised by a strong woman.”

Cast member Sienna Miller was praised by Costner for her “luminous” performance, which he said brought her characters to life, even though she was unable to attend the podcast taping.

“I make movies for men,” he continued. “That’s what I do. But I won’t make a movie unless I have strong female characters, and that’s the way I’ve had my career. And I think that’s why I have a good audience. I thank you, women, for bringing your men here. It was a Western, after all.”

Costner’s latest project, Horizon: An American Sagais a four-part film series, the first part of which has been released and the second part is scheduled for August.

The other two parts are in production. He directs and stars in this epic story, which spans 15 years of expansion before and after the Civil War.

This marks his return to directing after a 20-year hiatus, following his Oscar-winning debut with Dance with wolves in 1991, and subsequent realization efforts in The postman (1997) and Open range (2003).

In recent years, Costner has focused on acting and producing, most notably on the series Yellow stonefrom which he officially left on June 20.
