Jude Bellingham continues his perfect season, Barcelona are willing to let Robert Lewandowski leave for free and Girona boss Michel makes a HUGE Champions League claim… 10 THINGS WE LEARNED from La Liga

Real Madrid won the championship, but on the same day Girona reached the Champions League and that seemed like an even bigger feat.

Both clubs were able to celebrate while Barcelona could only rage against a mediocre campaign in which not only are they not the best team in Spain, they are not even the best team in the Catalonia region.

Striker Artem Dovbyk has made a major impact for Girona, who have shocked everyone this campaign.

During this time, many stars made significant contributions to Real’s success, including Jude Bellingham.

Mail Sport’s Pete Jenson brings you ten things we learned from a decisive weekend in La Liga.

Michel wants Liverpool

When you’ve just beaten Barcelona 8-2 on aggregate, you have the right to ask for whatever you want if you’re Girona manager Michel.

He wants Liverpool and Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund to enter the Champions League draw.

He wants to go to Anfield, to the Allianz Arena and see the Yellow Wall. These clubs will not want to go to Montilivi if that is where Girona will play their European matches next season.

Vinicius celebrates his status quo

Vinicius celebrated the league title by rubbing salt into Barcelona’s wounds with a tweet referencing Ronald Araujo’s famous battle cry “The start of a new era” after Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup in 2023.

Contrary to what optimistic Barça fans thought then, this was not the dawn of a new era of Barça dominance, but the same old Madrid, but with a new generation of players.

Bellingham’s first season was perfect

Bellingham was the choice for these young stars. There was a 10 out of 10 rating for him in Marca’s ratings for the season.

And with him on pace to finish as the team’s leading scorer and fourth-most minutes, it’s hard to argue with the perfect score. And all this during his first campaign, at only 20 years old.

Laporta should be angry with himself

“It won’t be enough,” Joan Laporta was heard lamenting several times after leaving his seat in the directors’ box at Montilivi. It wasn’t the first time this season that he did little to hide his fury – although no trays of canapes were sent flying this time.

The president must also assume his share of responsibility. He oversaw the departures of Jordi Cruyff and Mateu Alemany last summer.

Their signings won the league last year, this time as Joao Felix Joao Cancelo, Vitor Roque and Oriol Romeu brought in by Laporta-appointment Deco were not up to the task.

Roque’s future between Barcelona and his young Brazilian

Roque cost an initial fee of €30m when he arrived in the winter window but was barely used by Xavi and watched the 4-2 defeat to Girona from the bench on Saturday.

His wife Dayana Lis couldn’t help but express her feelings on social media with three emojis. One of them, with her hand covering her mouth, seemed to be saying that it was better if she said nothing, even though she said a lot about the message.

Roque, 19, has only played 315 minutes since his arrival.

Modric in a league of his own

Luca Modric’s influence may be fading, but that league title still counts as one of his and he now has 25 trophies at Real Madrid. He equals Karim Benzema and Marcelo.

Winning the European Cup would put him off the field. What a way out.

Girona wins if it finishes second

There is financial reward for Girona finishing second – a point clear of Barca with four to play. If they take Barcelona’s place in the Spanish Super Cup, they will earn a considerable amount of money.

It won’t be the 6 million euros Barcelona would have to pay, as the Saudi hosts pay less to the Spanish Football Federation if Barca or Madrid fail to do so.

But he still hopes they continue to grow and this is aimed at increasing their allowable salary cap, which this season was only the 15th highest in Spain.

Dovbyk first at 20

Gone are the days when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo scored 20 goals before Christmas, it’s the magic number for Spanish strikers at the end of the season.

Girona’s Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk is the first to break the barrier this year. If he manages to resist the challenge of Jude Bellingham (18) and Robert Lewandowski (17), he will finish top scorer in La Liga.

Lewandowski for free

Barca’s Polish striker could still overtake Dovbyk, but even if he did, Barcelona believe he is worth more to them than being retained.

They would even agree to a no-transfer-fee sale for him if it meant not having to pay his wages for another season – a gross estimated at €30m for the 35-year-old.

Girona is the comeback king

And the last word on Girona. On top of all that can be said about their brilliant campaign, they are extraordinary in adversity.

Eight times this season they have been down in games and come back to win.
